Keeping fish alive from the deep!!!
by John Siejak
Taking care of fish that are caught out of deep water is not terribly difficult, but a combination of anglers not knowing exactly what they are doing and not fishing over fifteen feet deep on a regular basis leaves most anglers clueless when it does come time to manage these fish in
the livewell. This is a basic overview of some of the deep water fish care points that can be done inexpensively and without installing additional gear on your boat.
When do fish need special care? When water surface temperatures are over 75 degrees Fahrenheit, stress on the fish and oxygen that water can hold is reduced. At this point, simply recirculating the livewell with freshwater may not be enough to supply oxygen to a limit, or two limits of fish.
Also, fish that are taken out of water deeper than 18 feet, generally require special attention.
